What is Botanical Art?
Botanical art combines scientific precision with artistic expression, in order to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of plants. It often serves scientific and educational purposes, providing a visual record of plant species for identification and documentation. Before the invention of photography, botanical illustration was the only way to communicate about a plant’s characteristics and uses.
Today botanical art has become a form of fine art appreciated for its aesthetic qualities, and a range of mediums are used, including watercolour, graphite, coloured pencils, and pen and ink.
Botanical artists employ skillful techniques to convey not only the physical characteristics of plants but also their essence, capturing the spirit of nature in each illustration.
